How to Replace Window Panes

A cracked window pane can cause a lot of trouble. This can be an opportunity to upgrade to energy-efficient windows or insulated ones to enjoy benefits such as improved comfort, higher resale value and reduced utility bills.

You can do it yourself at less than what it would cost to hire an expert. You only need the proper tools and a few minutes of your time.

It is best to do this using a sturdy ladder rather than the ground, and replace window pane to have someone stand below the sash to help hold it steady.

Once you have removed all the old putty, prepare the window frame to accommodate the new pane. Find the width and the height of the opening for the sash by subtracting 1/8 inch from each measurement (to allow for seasonal expansion and contraction). These measurements can be taken to an hardware or home centers store to have an item cut from glass that is in stock to the correct size. You can also cut the glass by yourself if you possess the appropriate tools.

After putting in the new glass, apply some caulking around the edge. This will make the glass weatherproof. After getting rid of the old putty glazier points as well as any remaining residue clean the frame thoroughly with an utility knife. Luckily, most windows can be easily replaced by simply putting a brand new piece of glass in its place. The glass is held in place with a small metal clip called a glazier's point, and putty, which is often called glazing compound. Remove the old pane and clean the area with an abrasive, pull-type scraper or wood chisel. Wear safety glasses and gloves while you do this work. You'll need a heating gun if the window is glued into the frame.

If you're planning to install the original sash in the future, take care to remove the molding pieces that are used to secure the old pane. Sand the sash until it's flat and ready to receive new caulk. Once the sash is installed and sanded, apply a fresh silicone caulk to the glass to ensure that it won't leak or discolor over time.

Remove the glazing points in the rabbets. These are the grooves in the sash, which is where the glass is. If they are hard to chisel, hold a hand tool like a heat gun over them for a few minutes to soften them. If you're using a heat gun, make sure not to scratch the sash or its railings by using the tool too closely.

Once the old glazing points and putty have been removed make a bed for the new pane. Roll a rope with glazing compound between your fingers and then make it about 1/2 inch thick. Press it into the rabbets where the glass will be placed. It is crucial that the glass rests against the putty on both sides If you have to do so, gently tap the glass into the rabbet using your thumb.

If the new pane is cracked, you can use the silicone caulk or glass glue that is based on solvents to cover the crack before pressing it in the sash. If the crack is not sealed, you'll require putty to keep the water out. Once the putty is dry remove the oily film off the glass and let it dry completely before you paint. Paint after the putty has completely dried. It won't make a strong seal and could leak or discolor with time.

Paint

If you've experienced a broken window pane, then you may be worried about the cost of replacing it. But the truth is that replacing one glass pane does not have to break the bank when you do it yourself. Even a double glazed window replacement-paned window could be replaced at a fraction of the cost it costs for a professional.

If you're working with large glass windows first, ensure that it is securely fixed to the frame. This task can be made relatively simple and quick with the proper tools and techniques.

When you are ready to begin with the removal of the window pane. Remove the metal glazing points that are attached to it. They are basically tiny metal triangles which function as "nails" that hold the window in place within the frame of wood. They are placed under a bead of glazing putty, which hardens into a solid, formed wedge which holds the window in place and hides the edges.
