Best Over-Ear Headphones

Over-ear headphones, unlike earbuds, encapsulate the ears completely. They also allow for larger drivers, which deliver greater bass and a larger soundstage. Many of them also feature active noise cancellation and Bluetooth technology.

The latest Master and Dynamic MW65 update offers excellent audio, a variety of ANC modes and impressive battery life in an elegant and distinct design.

1. Sony WH-1000XM4 Wireless

Sony has improved on an already great pair of headphones with the WH-1000XM4 Wireless. They're lighter, feel more built, have more balanced sound profiles (though still bass heavy) and include an app that lets you do some audio-related customization. They have improved their active noise cancellation, eliminating more ambient sounds and have a longer battery life.

These headphones utilize Bluetooth 5.0 and support SBC, AAC, and Sony's own LDAC codec. The latter can transfer high-resolution audio however, you'll need compatible devices and a streaming service. The WH-1000XM4s is also able to connect two Bluetooth devices at the same time and automatically switch between them as needed. This feature is accessible through the Sony Headphones Connect App and is very effective.

The touch panels are more sensitive than the XM3. They respond quicker to a tap on a panel and are easier to manage when making a phone call or listening to music. Sony also included an option that makes voices sound clearer and more precise during calls which is evident and a nice feature.

While the WH1000XM4s aren't perfect, they're one of the best wireless headphones we've tested. They're comfortable, good to the touch, and have an impressive battery that can last more than 30 hours continuously. They can be used passively with a TRS cable. This is ideal for travel or preserving power.

The WH1000XM4s provide a superior alternative to the Bowers & Wilkins Wireless Over-Ears Px7 S2. The Sonys are more comfortable and their ANC can block out more ambient sounds. The B&Ws feature an EQ that is more flexible and an app companion to adjust the audio performance. The B&Ws are more robust, and can pair with two Bluetooth devices simultaneously. They also support aptXHD and have an AI-driven engine that tries to scale compressed music up to high-resolution. This is called DSEE Extreme, and it enhances the clarity of music when listening to lossless audio files.

2. Bose QuietComfort 45/QC45 Wireless

The $329 Bose QuietComfort45 sound cancelling headset is the most recent version of a headset that has become a favorite among commuters and passengers all over the world. The new model doesn't reinvent the wheel. It uses the same formula which was the basis of its predecessor's success, while adding the USB-C technology and improved noise cancellation.

Similar to the QC 35 II before them, these over-ear Bose headphones sport a luxurious look and feel that exudes quality. The headband, which is made of plastic, offers a firm feel thanks to the hinges made of metal at pivot points. It also has the ratcheting mechanism that is familiar when you extend or retract your ear cups. The cups are cushioned and have soft pads that fit over your ears without pressing your head. They weigh 238 grams and are compact when folded. They can be used with a coat or sweater as the noise cancellation function is functional even when they are not on your head.

Despite their reputation as comfortable headphones they do not provide the best sound quality at this price. The frequencies are comparatively flat and bluetooth Stereo Headphones lack the details that headphones with higher prices might be able to bring out. The upper registers are boosted which is great for most music genres but can be problematic for more delicate and intricate genres. The bass is decent, but lacks punch.

The ability to pause playback after removing the headset is a feature that is absent. This is standard in this price range and is something Bose's competitors have offered for a long time. Another oversight was the absence of an in-app EQ. Bose has preset EQs available in the app but it would be nice to have a manual control.

Bluetooth 5.0 is supported, with multipoint as well as more advanced codecs, such as aptX Adaptive. You can download the Bose Audio app to adjust the volume and voice assistant settings.

The QC45s come with four microphones inbuilt to hear your voice while on the phone. The headsets have a good call quality, but they don't permit you to muffle the sound during playback like other wireless headphones. Update: A firmware update for the QC45s in February 2022 added manual settings for EQ to the audio app. This is a welcome upgrade.

3. Focal Bathys Wireless

Focal is a French audio brand that produces high-performance headphones. They are known for their style and comfort which tell listeners that they're hearing something unique. Their first venture into wireless headphones that cancel out noise, the Bathys are a stunning set of headphones that sound and look great. They also come with an inbuilt high-performance USB DAC which means you can use them for wired and wireless listening.

The Bathys come with a great battery performance, with Focal claiming 30 hours of continuous bluetooth headphones wireless headphones Stereo Headphones (Vargas-Newton-2.Technetbloggers.De) playtime. We actually got more from them with more than 40 hours of playtime on average of a single charge. If you do need to recharge, there's an indicator light on the right ear cup that will turn red when the earphone needs to be charged.

They offer a good amount of features for headphones of this price with support for multiple devices at the same time and automatic pairing (though you'll need to select your source device each time you would like to listen). The headphones have an inbuilt microphone that can be used with voice assistants like Siri or Alexa. They also come with an intuitive interface that makes it easy to manage your music and make calls.

Bathys over-ear headphones perform well in our noise cancellation test, reducing ambient noise by an average of 9 decibels. This isn't as impressive a result as the ANC in the Sony WH-1000XM4 or Bose QuietComfort 45/QC45 Wireless, however it's still quite effective.

In our tests of the quality of sound from headphones, the Bathys did well overall, with a a frequency response that mostly matches the SoundGuys headphone preference curve, with only slight differences in the bass and mids. The Bathys have a booming sound that can make vocals, instruments and cymbals look a bit obscure.

They also have excellent leakage resistance, which means you can wear them out in public without worrying about others listening to your music. Their mic is passable for recording via Bluetooth with just a little distortion between the mid-treble and treble.

4. Sennheiser Momentum 4

The Sennheiser Momentum Wireless is a new update of the company's flagship Bluetooth headsets. The Momentum 3 was a solid but not a great entry in this class. The latest pair improves on the previous generation with a sleeker design, improved gesture controls and massive battery life.

The improvements are subtle but make for an over-ear set of headphones that feel like an upgrade. The Momentum 4s are flat and aren't foldable however they come with a sturdy hardshell case that protects them when on the move. They also follow the pattern of several other recent Bluetooth headphones, like the ones from Sony and Bowers & Wilkins, to be incredibly device-agnostic. They work with both Apple iPhones as well as Android phones, but they do not have the AirPods' extra features like Find My Support and head-tracked spatial audio.

The most obvious difference here is the massive battery, which promises up to 60 hours of playback with noise cancellation activated. This is nearly twice as much as most of the other brands and enough to allow you to travel for Bluetooth Stereo Headphones a longer period of time without worrying about finding an outlet.

Billy Steele, senior editor at Engadget, gave the headphones an 82 percent score. He cited their audio quality and ANC features as their strengths. His only complaint is that they lack a sense of gravitas in the mids as well as treble, meaning that orchestral pieces tend to sound flat rather than grand. The bass is well-rounded but it can sound too loud, which can cause fatigue in songs that have high-pitched bass lines, like the drum hits in As I Lay Dying’s Forever. The cymbals can sound smoky rather than full and there's not a real sense of depth in the lows.

The Momentum 4s shouldn't place pressure on your neck or ears. They can be fidgety if you wear them around the home or during long listening sessions. They can move on your head and make intense head movements. This could cause them to wake up at random times, which can be distracting when listening to music or making calls. They shut down automatically after 15 minutes, and can be switched off manually by pressing the power button.
